Why Add comBATON to Your Summer MA Camp?

ComBATON, unlike most martial arts, is always conducted as a group activity. As humans we are are drawn to activities we can do with our friends. There is a comfort level to being with those who "watch our back." Working as part of a team increases our self-confidence due to the "safety in numbers" mindset we are born with. Children are naturally drawn to group activities.

Adding a low cost fun way to round out your curriculum provides an instant way to avoid boredom during summer martial arts camps. Once I taught a 4 hour class for two weeks as part of a school daycare summer camp. The block of time was set by the public school sponsoring the camp and was part of their summer daycare program. As you know, there is no way that elementary students have the attention span to practice martial arts for that length of time.

They can however, do a variety of activities such a warm-up, some forms, a bit of martial arts history, a game of comBATON, some sparring and a martial arts related craft activity in that time though. Both you and your students will enjoy breaking up such a long block of time.

In order to create a workable lesson plan, take the average age of your students and add 2 to that number. That will give you the average attention span of an age group in minutes. Of course, there are always exceptions. For comBATON you can double the normal attention span and triple it if you include doing baton tossing and kicking drills as well.

European comBATON Jacky Detaille made a video of his players doing comBATON Drills in Bellegarde, France recently. Take note of the beautiful stone walls of the gym. It looks like an old castle. Leave it to the French to do it with style! Click on the link below to see the video.
